Wei Hongtian, Ambassador to Grenada, published a signed article "The Truth about China-Latin America Relations and Cooperation" in Georgian media.

On February 14th, 2025, Wei Hongtian, Ambassador to Grenada, published a signed article "The Truth about China-Latin America Relations and Cooperation" in the mainstream media of Grenada, New Today, Information Today and Grenada Today.

The article points out that US Secretary of State rubio made a series of untrue and negative remarks about China during her recent visit to Latin American countries, which interfered in China’s internal affairs, undermined China-cooperation and harmed China’s legitimate rights and interests.

The article refutes Lu’s five untrue and negative remarks one by one:

First, Lu said Panama should "reduce China’s influence and control over the canal". The article emphasizes that China has never participated in canal management and operation, never intervened in canal affairs, supported Panama’s sovereignty over the canal, and devoted itself to maintaining the status of the canal as a permanently neutral international waterway. History has repeatedly proved that it is the United States that really threatens the stability of the Panama Canal.

Second, Lu said that China "exerted influence" on Latin America through economic cooperation and infrastructure investment. The article points out that the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Latin America are based on the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, openness and tolerance, and win-win cooperation, which provides real development opportunities for both sides. The United States linked aid to political conditions, and demanded reforms according to Western standards. Latin American countries chose to cooperate with China, which met the needs of Latin America.

Third, Lu called China’s Belt and Road Initiative a "debt trap" for other countries. The article emphasizes that China supports Latin America and other developing countries to improve their infrastructure construction, enhance their independent development capabilities and make important contributions to promoting regional growth. China’s so-called "debt trap" is a "discourse trap" in which the United States and Western countries discredit China and interfere with China’s cooperation with developing countries.

Fourth, Lu advocated limiting the cooperation between China’s scientific and technological enterprises and Latin American countries in the construction of 5G infrastructure. The article emphasizes that China has always been committed to maintaining network security and cooperated with all parties based on the principle of mutual benefit and win-win. This remark is a pretext for the United States to engage in protectionism, use state power to suppress China’s development, and push for "decoupling and breaking the chain", which can’t stop the pace of cooperation between China and other countries.

Fifth, Lu praised Guatemala for recognizing Taiwan Province as a "democratic country". The article pointed out that this statement not only blatantly violated the one-China principle, but also seriously interfered in China’s internal affairs. The question of Taiwan Province is purely an internal affair of China, and no external interference is allowed. The United States should abide by the one-China principle and Three Joint Communiqués and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs on the Taiwan Province issue.

Finally, the article points out that today’s world has entered a new period of turbulence and change, and China is willing to work with other countries, including Grenada, to embrace global well-being, transcend barriers and conflicts and achieve common prosperity. Some American politicians should be based on facts and respect the independent choices made by Latin American countries.
